WHAT SIZE HOOP?

If you are not sure what size would work for you, stand up and measure the distance from the floor to the mid-point between your navel (belly button) and your sternum (middle of your ribs).

The quickest and easiest way to find this point is:
  1. Use the first finger of one hand to mark the location of your tummy button.

  2. Then place your other hand sideways above this finger, so your first three fingers are above it.

  3. Now move the finger marking your tummy button so it is above the three fingers. Presto! this is the place!

  4. Measuring from the floor to this point will give you the diameter of your first hoop.

NB. If you intend to use your new hoop in your living room, or a similar confined space, please double check that it will fit. We cannot replace a new hoop that is found to be too large for your chosen hoop space.

If you are not sure whether your hoop will fit, measure a broom handle (or similar) to the size of your chosen hoop diameter, hold this handle at your waist so it extends horizontally to the full hoop diameter, and then turn a complete circle.

If the broom handle (or whatever you are using) collides with anything, you will need to reconsider your chosen hoop size!

It is often better to begin with a slightly larger hoop and, as your learn more about how hooping feels, you can decide whether to change to a different size. A larger hoops will rotate more slowly, giving you a bit more time to coordinate your movements. Smaller hoops require more effort - you have to move faster to keep them going. While this can provide more of a workout, you may find that learning new moves is challenging and using a faster hoop can be more tiring, especially when you are a beginner.

Your preferred hoop size will probably change as your hooping skills improve and you may want to experiment with different diameter hoops for different moves.

There is no perfect way to determine the 'ideal' hoop size as we are all unique with different levels of skill and flexibility.

You can then decide whether to order a custom hoop size, or choose the nearest size from the various sizes we offer: 34", 36" and 38" in 20mm tube and from 38" to 46" in 25mm tube.
To illustrate - you may find that your measurement from floor your midpoint is 39" or 41", and you may decide that a 40" or 42" hoop would be a comfortable size for you. If you are already an accomplished hooper, you may want a faster hoop, in which case you could opt for 38" hoop. If you decide on a size that is not mentioned when you order, let us know and we will make a custom size hoop for you.

The size you prefer may well change as your hooping skills improve. You may find you want to experiment with different diameter hoops (and pipe) for different moves. Many people begin to "collect" hoops over time, in different sizes and weights for different moves (and moods!)

HOOP CARE

As a general rule, if you are hooping inside it is best to practice on wooden floor or carpet. If you are hooping outside, find an area that is grassy area or very, very smooth.

Concrete or paving will not be kind to your hoop. Any hard or abrasive surface (including very dry earth) will rapidly damage tape when the hoop falls (which it will, especially at the beginning) or when trying those natty moves to lift the hoop from the floor to knee or higher.

Keep your hoop away from extremes of temperature - try not to leave it in strong sunlight or in a warm car, and avoid resting it against a hot radiator. Prolonged exposure to heat can warp the pipe and may soften or even melt the glue on the tape, which may leave your hoop with a sticky surface, or cause the colours to run or meld together.

Avoid bending, pulling on or overly distorting your hoop - do not allow it to be used for games like "tug of war". Treat it with respect and it will last you long into your hoop journey.

Please note that hoops are not sold as toys and are intended for recreational / fitness use by adults.
